Nowruz celebrations began on Tuesday night marking what's known as Wednesday Eve which is the spring equinox. They will continue until April 1, the 13th day of spring.

Persians typically gather around bonfires and the young jump over fires as they chant the Persian phrase, "Give me your beautiful red color/Take back my sickly pallor." This ritual is supposed to clean the body of illness, bad feelings, etc, getting rid of the unhealthy things and picking up the warmth, the glow, of the fire," Afkhami, the Foundation for Iranian Studies director, said.

Afghan Girl Found

This is an old article but I love this story. In browsing National Geographic I came across this picture once again and as always, the sea green eyes took me. This photo has graced the biggest magazines and she had no idea. Last March when I was backpacking, the story was advertised in huge posters on a Portuguese wall and the image brought that moment back in my memory. They sent a research team to find her and to get the full story of what she's gone through. Her name is Sharbay Gula.
